Uterine activity affects fetal status, and can impact long term neurodevelopmental outcomes for the newborn. Nurses and obstetrical providers must be able to recognize excessive uterine activity in an effort to intervene in a timely and appropriate manner. Excessive uterine activity is a common area of liability. Nurses, and obstetrical providers must be aware of evidence-based practices, risk management strategies, and the appropriate standards of care to ensure positive maternal and neonatal outcomes, but also to safeguard their practice. Class participants will identify the components of a complete uterine activity assessment, review trends in litigation related to uterine activity in labor, and review risk management strategies that reduce liability and improve maternal-fetal safety.

Introduction to Uterine Activity in Labor, Fetal Status & Liability
You will review the basic physiology of uterine contractions, and the affect labor contractions have on the fetus. You will also identify the components of a complete uterine activity assessment as well as risk management approaches that will reduce your risk of litigation while ensuring maternal and fetal safety. Trends in litigation related to uterine activity in labor will be reviewed.
Pre Test / Case Study
A pre test will evaluate your knowledge base prior to completing this educational session. The pre test will help you identify knowledge gaps specific to uterine activity in labor, affects on the fetus, and common areas of litigation.
A case study will be presented specific to excessive uterine activity, & the development of a Category II FHR tracing. Neonatal outcomes will be reviewed, as well as the identified case theme of the lawsuit. Additionally, plaintiff allegations, defenses, and the trial verdict will be reviewed.

Carrie Barber
DNP, APRN, CNM, OB/GYN NP, C-EFM
Dr. Carrie
Barber is
the owner, founder, and principal medical legal consultant at Barber Medical Legal Nurse
Consulting, LLC, an independent medical legal consulting practice approved by
the Florida Board of Nurses as a continuing education
(CE) provider. Dr. Barber is an advanced practice registered nurse, board-certified certified nurse
midwife, and OB/GYN nurse practitioner with over 26 years of clinical experience in
healthcare. She is a clinically active certified nurse midwife with a sub-specialty
certification from the National Certification Corporation (NCC) in Electronic
Fetal Monitoring. Dr. Barber practices at a level III perinatal center where
she is responsible for obstetrical triage, intrapartum, and postpartum
management. She
has practiced women’s health care in various
settings including antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and academia. Dr. Barber is a former labor and
delivery nursing director for a level I community hospital, and has experience serving as a
nursing professor teaching
maternity nursing, nursing leadership and
management, and healthcare policy. Dr. Barber's medical
legal background offers unique perspectives, and understanding of the links
between perinatal medicine, risk management, education, and the law.
